About Safaris...

The word "safari" is of Swahili origin, and is synonymous today with any journey, but a true safari can only take place where the word was born. Under the limitless blue sky of East Africa lives a wild animal population that is staggering in it's sheer numbers and variety. Try to imagine the hundreds of thousands of big game animals that roam the plains of East Africa. Whether you are a novice traveler or world explorer, nothing stimulates the senses and ignites the imagination with the same intensity as a safari to East Africa.

Although many think of a safari as being driven through the plains of Africa in a open Jeep type vehicle with an escort guiding the way, there are actually several different types of safaris to choose from.  They range from the very rugged to the very luxurious.  Depending upon your budget and travel preferences, here are some common options:

Mobile Tented Safaris

This type of safari offers a taste of Africa in the old tradition You will travel off the beaten track away from the main stream tourist flow, enjoying more privacy and the thrill of open air life in the African bush.  This is one for the truly adventurous!

Family Safaris

All the hotels and lodges featured are very children friendly , and the arrangements for most days allow for the children to be taken care of by trained animators and naturalists.  Air travel is used extensively to allow for more time for fun and educational activities, and less time becoming agitated, tired and restless on bumpy and dusty roads.

Honeymoon Safaris

Most honeymoon safaris are extremely high-class operations with a naturally romantic atmosphere that is tailored around the guests. From Loldia’s lawns that tumble into Lake Naivasha, to the tranquil oasis of Lake Victoria’s Mfangano Island Camp, a honeymoon like this will be difficult to match!

Camping Safaris

The ultimate experience for the young and really adventurous is a camping Safari through Africa. With adventure around every corner, and sometimes being so remote, that the nearest town could be some 300 kilometers away, this trip is certainly not for the faint hearted. A great deal of participation and flexibility from all passengers is expected on this type of trip, without which the tour cannot be a success.

Walking Safaris

Aptly described as a sea of land and water, Botswana's Okavango Delta is a spectacular wilderness of wildlife... It is here that we host our exciting and adventurous Walking Trails... A remarkable scenic area with a superb variety of habitats, trees, birds and animals. Guests may also consider staying at Xudum, a luxury tented camp, or at Rann's Camp, a superb bush retreat.

Canoe Safaris

These fully backed-up , three night luxury canoe safaris are run from Ruckomechi Camp and traverse the entire length of the Mana Pools National Park shoreline. Operated as a 3 night safari. All trips are supported by a vehicle with a three-man team (one cook and two others). All camps are set up prior to the canoeist's arrival.

Horseback Safaris

The sun rises at your feet as you enjoy a cup of tea or coffee in bed.  After a light breakfast, you mount your horse and ride westwards following elephant trails from one palm island to another. through seas of grass into the backcountry.  After lunch you ride out into the plains, later enjoying a drink while the sun goes down.  How does that sound?

Elephant Safaris

Randall Moore, pioneered the use of African elephants for Elephant Back Safaris. Today these safaris are operated by Elephant Back Safaris and are based at Abu's Camp, which is named for Abu, the lead African elephant. Abu has starred in "White Hunter, Black Heart," "Circles in the Forest" and "Power of One." Abu and his family delight guests on a safari totally unique on the African continent.

Train Safaris

From the luxury of a private lounge at the railway station, enter your carriage of rich gold, deep blues and warm wood paneling off-set by detailed marquetry. Iced mineral water awaits and meticulously crafted  fittings grace your suite. By day your private suite is an elegant and relaxing haven. Generous lounge chairs afford the opportunity to enjoy unparalleled views of Africa's panoramic and enigmatic sights.

Gorilla Tracking Safaris

Tracking gorillas through misty, seemingly impenetrable forests can be an exhausting process as the paths are often slippery, entangled and wet. However, this effort is quickly forgotten the minute you encounter these beautiful creatures. They instantly capture your full attention with their acrobatic antics and cacophony of grunts, screeches and chest beating.

There are three main safari regions in Africa:

1) East Africa: (Tanzania and Kenya).

2) Southern Africa: ( Zambia, Zimbabwe, Namibia & Botswana).

3) South Africa.

There are primarily nine traditional African safari destinations. Each country provides a somewhat different safari experience. The table below will give you a good indication of popular destinations, and sights to see in the respective countries.
